Looks like the Kirby Smart move is already taking effect.
And that may not be good news for Alabama.
Four-star recruit Ben Davis (Gordo, Ala./Gordo) is ESPN's No. 5-ranked outside linebacker prospect for 2016, and, in large part because his dad, Wayne Davis, was a star defensive player for the Crimson Tide back in the 1980s, most assumed Ben would follow in his pop's footsteps and make the short trip east to Tuscaloosa for his college career.
The younger Davis may still do just that. But now it's looking like it would go down as perhaps a mild surprise if he does.
The coveted 6-foot-4, 237-pounder, who, because of his frame and skill set, has drawn comparisons to former Alabama star linebacker Rolando McClain, came out with his top five Monday on Twitter.
Monday also happened to be the day that Georgia introduced Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart as its new head coach. And, probably not coincidentally, Davis has Georgia, not Alabama, as his No. 1. Alabama is Davis' No. 2. LSU is his No. 3 followed in order by Notre Dame and Auburn.
Davis is the third highest ranked outside linebacker prospect in the South still up for grabs right now. The other two are Rahshaun Smith (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) and Lyndell Wilson (Montgomery, Ala./Carver). Smith is ESPN's No. 2-ranked OLB prospect and Wilson is ESPN's No. 1-ranked OLB prospect.
Not All Good News For Dawgs: It wasn't all happy smiles for Georgia these past few days.
The Bulldogs did receive a decommitment from four-star recruit Devwah Whaley (Beaumont, Texas/Central). Whaley announced his decommitment on Twitter Monday night. The 6-foot, 195-pounder is ESPN's No. 3-ranked running back prospect for 2016 and hold offers from numerous big-name schools across the country.
Top DTs Still Available: Two SEC schools -- Florida and LSU -- remain in contention for one of the top defensive tackle prospects still available, four-star recruit Shavar Manuel (Tampa, Fla./IMG Academy). Florida State and South Florida are also in the mix for Manuel.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder is ESPN's No. 8-ranked defensive tackle prospect.
A handful of higher ranked defensive tackle prospects remain uncommitted at this time too. They include No. 6-ranked Derrick Brown (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier), No. 4-ranked Dexter Lawrence (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest), No. 3-ranked Rashard Lawrence (Monroe, La./Neville) and No. 1-ranked Rashaun Gary (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic).
Latest Team Rankings: There was little change in this week's ESPN's team recruiting rankings compared to last week. In fact, in the top 25, all nine SEC teams remained right where they were last week. The list includes No. 2 LSU, No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 6 Georgia, No. 9 Auburn, No. 10 Florida, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 21 Arkansas.
